The Tokizane Toshihiko Prize

The Tokizane prize is established with a trust fund donated by Madame Nobu Tokizane for promotion of brain science in Japan. Madame Tokizane is the widow of late Professor Toshihiko Tokizane (1910-1973; University of Tokyo - 1956 to 1970, and also University of Kyoto - 1970 to 1973), who was a pioneer and promoter of brain science after WWII in Japan. He clearly knew the poor status of brain science in Japan at that time and made enormous efforts to construct a basis for development of brain research. He tried hard to appeal for the necessity of brain research to the public, and used the influence of Ministry of Education officials to establish new brain science laboratories in many universities, as well as organizing (for the first time) a nationwide special brain research project funded by the Japanese Government. In recognition of his memory and to promote original research in the area of the higher integrative function of the brain, the Tokizane Prize was started in 1999. In 2001, it became an official prize of Japan Neuroscience Society for outstanding research done by a Japanese National with his own leadership. The Tokizane Prize with a certificate and 1 million yen honararium is announced during the Japan Neuroscience Society Business Meeting and is given in principle to one researcher under 55 years old at the time of closing date of application each year.
